The difference between High voltage withstand testing and Insulation testing

The difference between High voltage withstand testing and Insulation testing

Voltage withstand test and insulation test are both testing methods for electrical equipment. However, before conducting a voltage withstand test, it is generally necessary to conduct an insulation test because voltage withstand is a destructive test. Only by ensuring that the insulation of the equipment is not a problem before applying voltage withstand can unnecessary burning of electrical equipment be avoided. What is the specific difference between these two experiments?

1. Different definitions

Voltage withstand testing is one of the main methods for testing the ability of electrical appliances, electrical equipment, electrical devices, electrical circuits, and electrical safety equipment to withstand overvoltage. Insulation test: Electrical equipment is constantly affected by various external factors during operation, and its performance will also change continuously. These external factors mainly include external electric fields, environment, high voltage, corrosion degree, and machinery.

2. Different experimental methods

Voltage resistance: It is mainly divided into two testing methods: hydraulic test and pneumatic test to conduct voltage resistance tests on electrical equipment. Insulation: According to the voltage during the testing process, insulation tests are divided into insulation characteristic tests and insulation withstand voltage tests. Diagnosis and testing of equipment in the event of a power outage can be carried out using non-destructive testing and withstand voltage AC testing as mentioned above, and destructive testing can only be carried out after completing non-destructive testing.

3. Different voltages

Insulation: Insulation resistance is measured using an insulation resistance tester (below 10000V) or an insulation shaker (below 2500V). Due to the relatively low test voltage, many insulation defects are not easily detected.

Due to the low test voltage, insulation testing is not easy to damage the tested equipment; Due to the high test voltage, the withstand voltage test is prone to damage the tested equipment during compression, especially in some cases. Although the withstand voltage test passes, it can cause damage to the tested equipment. Test personnel need to use a low voltage insulation test to test the insulation condition of the tested equipment after the withstand voltage test. Voltage withstand test: The high voltage used in the voltage withstand test can easily detect insulation defects in high-voltage equipment.

Under the influence of some unfavorable factors, power equipment is prone to unpredictable failures, and in severe cases, it can even lead to power interruption. Therefore, before putting high-voltage electrical equipment into operation in the power system, insulation tests should be conducted in advance to ensure the safe and stable operation of the power system.
